Aframe Signage

Aframe signs are one of the most cost effective ways to advertise your business and services. A frames are lightweight, easily transported and can be positioned anywhere. Types of Aframes

Metal Aframes

 Metal aframes are robust and very durable. They come in a powder coated finish and with two handles. Metal aframes have a solid metal face that can be printed on or covered with vinyl cut graphics. Timber A frames

Honour boards are used by all types of clubs and institutions. They recognise members achievements or contributions to their community. There are usually different categories. Vinyl lettering is used for all honour boards when hand painting is not required or specified by the customer.  Composite materials are used to give honour boards a more contemporary look.

STRATA SIGNS

Boat signage Northern Beaches

Do you need a sign for your yacht or motor cruiser?  There are two options for boat signage. Boat names are either sign written with paint or alternatively made with vinyl stickers.

3D Freestanding signs

3D signs are ideal for events and promotions. 3D letters when used on stage for an event give a lot of impact. Foam letters are light weight and cost effective therefore one of the best materials for large letters and logos. Polystyrene foam is best cut in letter styles that are suitable to stand on a flat surface. The foam letters are painted in any colour including pantone colours following company guidelines. Poly foam is available in various grades and thickness.  Free standing foam letters need to be between 150mm and 600mm thick. The height of the letters determines how thick the letters need to be made so they are stable when free standing.

Exterior grade foam is suitable for exterior building signs.  Letters must have at least 2 coats of exterior grade acrylic paint. This is to give them UV protection from the sun and make them long lasting.

Interior grade foam is cheaper and not as hard as the exterior grades. It is more cost effective and suitable for promotional signs and Event signage.

First impressions count!

This laser cut acrylic sign has custom made clear brackets fabricated to hold letters 300mm off the wall. The faux garden wall was then applied around the letters to give the impression of the name floating in front of the leaves.

The example below is a free standing foam sign around 10mtrs long. The University of Notre Dame engaged us to create an impressive sign to use on open days and special occasions.  The foam letters are large and stable but light enough to move around and store away after each event.

This example shows foam letters with individual bases collectively making the logo eight metres long. The advantage of individual foam letters with a base are:

• Individual letters are easier to transport especially when over a metre high
• Its easier to make a solid weighted base to provide sturdiness if using letters outside
• Easier for the client to move around and store away after use

Cost Effective

Foam letters are a cost effective option when compared with 3D fabricated acrylic or metal letters. They have the same look but without the big budget needed for metal and perspex fabrication.

For a greater impact , lighting can be used to cast dramatic shadows and highlight the foam structure consequently giving more impact.

How we create free standing foam letters

Netflix Australia needed large 3D logos for their new office in Sydney.

They also needed a quantity of the Netflix letter ‘N’. These would be used at different locations for event and promotional purposes.

3D foam letters are the best option when considering price and the finished product. The advantage of foam letters is that foam is light and easy to use for promotions, displays and events. Large letters over 1mtr to 2.4mtr high can still be carried and transported easily. Similiar size letters from fabricated acrylic or timber would be too heavy to move as well as being 3 times the price. The foam polystyrene letters and shapes are cut with a hot wire to give the best finish. The thickness of the letters can be anywhere from 50mm to 600mm. The thicker the foam, the more stable the letter when standing.

HOW TO MAKE STURDY FOAM LETTERS

Weights can be installed in the base of each foam letter. This gives the letters a much lower centre or gravity making them less likely to tip over.

HOW TO MAKE FOAM LETTERS MORE DURABLE

After the weights are added the whole letter is coated with 2 part epoxy resin. This gives a tougher more durable finish compared to just painted foam.

CLIENT BRIEF

A  Sydney based physiotherapy clinic has a studio in Curl Curl on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. A shop front renovation is needed with new signs that will be easily noticed and long lasting. Absolute Sign Solutions did an onsite inspection. Measurements were taken and a new design was mocked up for sign writing. The sign proof was then forwarded to the client for approval. This location is a busy road where thousands of people drive by every day. Therefore the hand painted message needed to be easily read and strategically positioned on the wall to maximise the view as you drive down the hill.

HOW SIGNS ARE DONE

We do as much preparation as possible prior to going on site. This includes layouts, measurements, checking OHS and traffic issues and communicating with the client so everything runs like clock work. The wall sign was all hand painted using a brush by our signwriters. The wall was very rough (see detail)

However this is no problem for an experienced signwriter.

Hand painting always gives you the best outcome for a long lasting wall sign. No other method will work as well on a rough surface. The only other option is by using sign panels which are produced and installed to the surface of the wall. However this can be costly. The life of the sign panels would probably be less than the hand painted signs, therefore not as cost effective. Another advantage of hand painted signs is that they can be touched up or recoated if needed down the track. Alternatively sign panels need to be removed and replaced with new ones when past their use by date. Often the customer prefers the look of a hand painted finish as it becomes and looks like ‘part of the wall’.
