3D Freestanding signs

3D signs are ideal for events and promotions. 3D letters when used on stage for an event give a lot of impact. Polyester foam can be cut into large shapes, logos and letters. Foam letters are light weight and cost effective therefore one of the best materials for large letters and logos. Polystyrene foam is best cut in letter styles that are suitable to stand on a flat surface. The foam letters are painted in any colour. This includes pantone colours or any specifications following company guidelines. Poly foam is available in various quality grades and thickness.  Free standing foam letters need to be between 150mm and 600mm thick. The height of the letters determines how thick the letters need to be made so they are stable when free standing.

Exterior grade foam is suitable for exterior building signs.  Letters must have at least 2 coats of exterior grade acrylic paint. This is to give them UV protection from the sun and makes them long lasting.

Interior grade foam is cheaper and not as hard as the exterior grades. It is more cost effective and suitable for promotional signs and Event signage.

First impressions count!

This laser cut acrylic sign has custom made clear brackets fabricated to hold the letters 300mm off the wall. The faux garden wall was then applied around the letters to give the impression of the name floating in front of the leaves.

The example below is a free standing foam sign around 10mtrs long. The University of Notre Dame engaged Absolute Sign Solutions to create a showpiece sign to use on open days and special occasions. The foam letters are large and stable but light enough to move around and store away after each event.

This example shows foam letters with individual bases collectively making the logo eight metres long. The advantage of individual foam letters with a base are:

• Individual letters are easier to transport especially when over a metre high
• Its easier to make a solid weighted base to provide sturdiness if using letters outside
• Easier for the client to move around and store away after use

Cost Effective

Foam letters are a cost effective option when compared with 3D fabricated acrylic or metal letters. They have the same look but without the big budget needed for metal and perspex fabrication.

For greater impact, lighting can be used to cast dramatic shadows and highlight the foam structure consequently giving more impact.

Colours available

Polystyrene foam can be cut or machined to shape. The letters can be painted in any colour.

This example for Westfield is 3D logo developed for a new promotional program.

This example is for a product launch for Bethesda Software owned by Microsoft

The example below shows the number sixty custom painted. The foam numbers have a flat shaved base therefore they are sturdy on a table or stage.

For those wanting to really make a statement, foam letters can also have a smooth acrylic face colour coded to match colours. Foam letters can be up to 2.5mtrs high and up to 600mm thick. Large foam letters are lightweight, therefore easy to move and are often used for events and promotional signs. Logos, branding, hashtags and symbols can be cut in solid freestanding foam and painted in corporate colours. These are then placed on stage in venues. Alternatively the foam can be pegged into the grass on ovals and arenas.

CLIENT BRIEF

A  Sydney based physiotherapy clinic has a studio in Curl Curl on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. A shop front renovation is needed with new signs that will be easily noticed and long lasting. Absolute Sign Solutions did an onsite inspection. Measurements were taken and a new design was mocked up for sign writing. The sign proof was then forwarded to the client for approval. This location is a busy road where thousands of people drive by every day. Therefore the hand painted message needed to be easily read and strategically positioned on the wall to maximise the view as you drive down the hill.

HOW SIGNS ARE DONE

We do as much preparation as possible prior to going on site. This includes layouts, measurements, checking OHS and traffic issues and communicating with the client so everything runs like clock work. The wall sign was all hand painted using brushes by our signwriters. The wall was very rough (see detail), therefore it needed someone with skill to achieve a good result.

However this is no problem for an experienced signwriter.

Hand painting always gives you the best outcome for a long lasting wall sign. No other method will work as well on a rough surface. The only other sign option is using sign panels. These are produced and then installed to the surface of the wall. However this can be costly. The life of the sign panels would probably be less than the hand painted signs, therefore not as cost effective. Another advantage of hand painted signs is that they can be touched up or recoated if needed any time in the future. To recoat the hand painted sign is cost effective. Alternatively sign panels need to be removed and replaced with new ones when past their use by date. Another thing worth considering is that the customer often prefers the look of a hand painted finish as it becomes and looks like ‘part of the wall’.

TYPES OF HONOUR BOARDS USED IN CLUBS

Honour boards are used by all types of clubs and institutions. They recognise members achievements or contributions to their community. There are usually different categories. Some examples are Presidents, Life members, Secretary, Treasurer. These are the people who run the club and make decisions for the members. Then there are other examples such as best sports people, top point scorers, top sales persons.

These honourboards are updated each year by a signwriter.

WHO USES HONOUR BOARDS

Honourboards are placed in a common area inside the club or wall of the club house. Types of clubs using honour boards are sporting clubs, academic clubs and educational clubs. Other examples of these are Scout groups, Girl Guides, Bridge Clubs, Surfboard riding clubs, Gardening Clubs.

TRADITIONAL HONOUR BOARDS

Traditional honour boards include laquered and stained timber boards. These are often finished with elaborate edging and mouldings. Traditional honour boards are either finished with gold leaf lettering or gold contour cut vinyl letters. RSL clubs, Bowling clubs and Private schools are examples of institutions that demand proper gold leaf finishes. This is due to gold leafs high quality and very traditional look. Gold leaf is also the longest lasting of any lettering. Alternatively metallic gold vinyl cut letters are more cost effective but are long lasting but only if quality cast vinyl is used.

Vinyl lettering is used for all honour boards when hand painting is not required or specified by the customer.  Composite materials are used to give honour boards a more contemporary look.

• Acrylic, also known as perspex. Different colours as well as 3mm to 20mm in thickness can be used.
• Aluminium composite sheets give you a variety of 2 pack baked enamel colours. Also available are brushed silver, gold, bronze and copper finishes.

Machinery Labels

Machinery labels are made from SAV (self adhesive vinyl) or metallic adhesive foils.. This high quality media is made of thin sheets of UV resistant PVC with a high bond acrylic glue which adheres to most surfaces.

Machinery labels are also made to any size. The custom made sizes will suit whatever the situation needs.

We also supply all types of bar code stickers for automatic price scanning of your products for distribution to retailers.

Cast Vinyl

Cast vinyl is the better quality media for machinery labels. Cast vinyl is very flexible therefore it can be moulded and stretched over irregular and curved surfaces.  Cast vinyl is best for long lasting adhesive letters and can last 10 years or more depending on the location and wear and tear. Typically cast vinyl is used for vehicle wraps, vehicle signage and any types of signs that need to last as long as possible especially in an exterior environment.

Calender Vinyl

Calender vinyl is used for machinery labels that don’t need to last forever.

Vinyl cut letters can be used for all types of identification and signage. Everywhere you look these days has some sort of vinyl lettering or sticker.

If you need a small run of stickers for your business, then stickers can be cut for any type of label. These quality stickers are cut in vinyl or printed and cut to shape in any quantity.

Another thing that can be created is vinyl cut letters. 

Vinyl cut letters are individually cut and can be applied with application tape.

Colours available

Many colours are available in adhesive vinyl films.

Mobile Advertising

Shipping containers have irregular walls designed to be very strong as well as light weight. The surface is made from corrugated metal which gives it strength as well as keeping weight down. Shipping containers are often used for advertising, so signage is applied on the sides to advertise products or companies logos may be signwritten. The corrugated surface is not really suitable for ‘stick on’ types of SAV signage.

Whats the solution? Handpainted signwriting! A professional signwriter can reproduce any logo or text on the irregular surface. For example if stickers are used they will distort when applied over the bending panels. A good signwriter will correct this visual distortion so it works for the customer.
